G'day,
None of these pages is "live", (in the sense of updating automatically), I'm afraid. So you have to wait about month or two (hopefully not longer) to see your contributions.
These pages are updated via FTP. I use the normal mailform CGI scripts which I use to get the votes and contributions emailed to myself. I use Agent to file and save the emails as text which are then added to the database. I have written the database program in Delphi to help me manage the list, and I use this to record all the votes I get and add the new contributions. Then when I am ready, I hit a button and the database creates HTML tables that I can insert into my Web Pages. Then I use the FTP to transfer the files over.
The pages are screaming out for better catagorisation (like dunny humor, traditional and modern, and of course, sayings relating to bedroom acts!) and I would like to add a section for people to make up their own sayings and see if they get any votes! I would like to develop a live database solution with instant updating, but don't have full control of my server, or web area in terms of coding (as yet).
This site was started after I posted a message to my one of my first ISP's local newsgroups (Pegasus in Australia- cafe.australia) titled "Outrageous Aussie Slang anyone?" This was about the beginning of '95. I was looking for some slang words to confuse my partner's parents in our email conversations. Being Dutch, this wasn't going to be too hard. But they did very well, so I had to find some tough ones. The response was great, and the thread continued for weeks. I was already looking to do something more significant than a "This is Me"page on the Web, and so I started this. I soon decided to specialise in Sayings and Phrases, and not just slang, partly because it was simply easier but mostly because they are more fun. And while at the time there was only one site (Larry's
Aussie Slang and Phrase Dictionary site) that I could find which had Australian Slang, I thought that there would be plenty more springing up, so I took the path of less competition! (and I was right! <grin> )
Well now I have talked your ear off, why don't you check out some of the other sayings sites out there.
Regards,
Malcolm.
